BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION
Below you will find all the information that was shared with parents at our
Back to School Night.
Religion: Students will be asked to memorize several prayers over the course of the
school year. They will be tested on them after ample review time. We will also cover the Commandments, Beatitudes, Works of Mercy, Saints, Liturgical Year, Mary, and the Rosary.
Homework Policies: No homework is assigned on the weekend. If your child is bringing
work home, this means he/she did not complete it on time. All homework is checked in the classroom daily. It is written on the board first thing in the morning. The children are given an appropriate amount of time, and then they are responsible for copying during their free time – recess, lunch, etc. Reminders are given for special subjects – Art, Music, Technology, Phys. Ed., and Library. All students are expected to copy all homework, including reminders. Please sign the copybook where your child copied the assignments. Failure to complete homework, get it signed, and return signed tests will result in calendar marks being recorded. Each student begins with a homework grade of 100. Calendar marks result in 1 point being deducted for each infraction. Excessive calendar marks may result in a disciplinary referral being issued. By now you should have seen the Homework Procedure page your child copied in the copybook. It is also on my web site. Please read it and sign it if you have not done so already.
Test Policies: There will be a spelling test every Friday, unless it is a short week. Tests for other subjects are usually given at the end of the chapter. A reminder will be written in the homework 1 week before, then again the night before. The tests are marked and returned the next day. Please sign and return the test the following day. If you need to keep it longer, please write a note in the copybook. All projects are expected on the date requested; points will be deducted accordingly. These will count as test grades.
Quality of Student Work: Neatness and completion are expected of all assignments. The children should do their best in all their work. Feel free to critique your child’s work, and require the best of them
Grading: All tests, projects, and graded assignments carry the same weight. Maintenance sheets are averaged together for 1 test grade. Participation is averaged in for a grade. I keep a record of the children’s participation. Fourth grade uses a number grading system. 70 is a passing grade. Social Studies, Science, and all special subjects are graded.
Conduct/Discipline: I expect the same behavior you do at home. Courtesy and respect are important aspects of our school community. The school and archdiocesan handbooks offer specific guidelines.
Communication with Parents: I use the copybook and calendar to communicate with you; I hope you’ll do the same. If you need to speak with me in a more private manner, please don’t hesitate to call the office or send a note in a sealed envelope. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
Daily Schedule: The school day begins at 7:50 and ends at 2:55. Your child’s weekly schedule can be found in the front of the copybook.
Lunch: No child is permitted to leave school to go to a public eatery, unless accompanied by an adult. Your child has the option of either cold or hot lunch. Papers regarding the hot lunch program have been sent or will be sent home. If your child eats a cold lunch, he/she is required to have a cloth desk covering. The children need to show the same respect for the lunch monitors that they do for you and me.
Uniform: Each student is required to be in complete uniform each day. Failure to comply will result in calendar marks, and, possibly, a referral being written.
Absence/Nurse: Any child who is absent from school must bring a written note signed by the parent or guardian stating the reason and the date(s) for the absence. If a child is absent the day of a test, they will take it the day they come back. Please arrange for another child or a brother/sister to take work home. If that’s not possible, your child can make up the work when they return.
